I'm looking for a library to help me retrieve the information about types in a assemblies without actually loading them into the memory. As in, I need to be able to pass a stream of bytes and obtain information about the types in it, such as name, size and type arguments. I have found a couple of libraries which seem to provide this kind of functionality, but I have no idea how to use them. It seems that in.NET 4 the assembly metadata is exposed through the System.Reflection namespace. Also, I found this: Assembly metadata and types It seems that the information I'm looking for is on page 83 of the linked document. The information is stored as an array of byte[] in a member called AssemblyDescription. However, there's no example of using it. A: This is extremely easy to do. Here is a quick example of how you would get the method or type of any object in the current assembly: using System; using System.Reflection; class Program { public static void Main(string[] args) { string fileName = Path.GetFileName(args[0]); Assembly assembly = Assembly.LoadFrom(fileName); MethodInfo[] methods = assembly.GetExportedTypes() .Where(type => type.IsPublic && typeof(MethodInfo).IsAssignableFrom(type)) .Select(type => type.GetMethods(BindingFlags.Public | BindingFlags.Instance)) .ToArray(); foreach (MethodInfo method in methods) { Console.WriteLine(method.Name); Console.WriteLine(method.ReturnType.FullName); } Console.ReadLine();
